Old McDonald’s Farm

Throughout the year, but especially in the spring-time, schools from around the Bay Area arrange field trips to the Ranch for their classes. Verne, wearing his favorite grubbies and a cowboy hat, show them all the animals and give them rides on the tractor.

One day I accompanied Verne. I wore a flowered apron and a little straw hat “for effect.” I had gathered some day-old bread so the children could feed the goats. As we were walking along a path to the barn one little boy tugged on my apron and frantically cried, “Mrs. McDonald, Mrs McDonald, where’s the bathroom?” After all, if this were “Old McDonald’s Farm,” I certainly must be Mrs. McDonald.
